Google’s surprise $12.5 billion bid for Motorola Mobility this morning is a bold attempt to move the needle for Google on several fronts. Google is going all in, dipping into its $39 billion of cash to make its biggest acquisition ever. The deal signals that mobile will be one of Google’s main growth drivers and that growth will come from entering new markets, specifically mobile hardware. With the acquisition, Google gains a portfolio of 17,000 patents and another 7,000 patents pending globally, an area where it is a currently a laggard. But more than anything, it signals how crucial it is for Google to control the Android experience from soup to nuts. There may now be 150 million Android phones and phones running the Android operating system command the largestmarket share smartphone , but Android the most popular single smartphone by far is still the iPhone. Buying Motorola is an acknowledgement on Google’s part that it must control the experience from software to hardware if it hopes to unseat Apple.

The FDP (liberals) are being opportunistic by going populist. They are in danger of falling below the 5% hurdle in most länders and thus disappearing from the political landscape. They do, however, have the majority of the population behind this one. A sure vote winner.

As going for “Eurobond” would be a vote loser both to Frau Merkel and possibly Sarko, they will have to come up with something more ingenious, some kind of fiscal measure to be applied to the Euro zone coupled with an increase of the sum available to the EFSF, a Eurobond in all but name.

This coupled to an earnest permanent ban of short selling and a ban on trading CDS instruments, which are the real Weapons of Mass Destruction, applied immediately, might do the trick. If not, tomorrow will come to be known as Black Tuesday or 8/16, the day they screwed it up for good.

Frau Dr. Angela Merkel will not be able to sit this one out, since Springteufelchen Sarko will not let her. Not sure what the popular French position is on this one, MC? Please enlighten us.
