Hungary's parliament has adopted a package of constitutional changes proposed by the ruling Fidesz party which critics say undermine democracy.
The conservative party has two-thirds of the seats in parliament, but the measures were approved overwhelmingly as opposition MPs boycotted the vote.
The amendment tightens up the laws on higher education, homelessness, election campaigns and family rights.
The EU expressed concern about the bill, which defies some court rulings.
"These amendments raise concerns with respect to the principle of the rule of law, EU law and Council of Europe standards," a statement by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland said.
Protesters gathered outside the building and were planning a march to the president's palace.
Before the vote, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused the EU of interfering in Budapest's domestic affairs.
The lengthy amendment overturns earlier constitutional court rulings and limits the court's right to challenge laws passed by parliament in future.

" David Cameron wins EU deal to cut red tape". Has he really! Well we'll see. Note: " Further action is required.... while always taking account of the need for proper protection of consumers and employees". And detailed talks in the Autumn,[ and organisational talks in December and consolidation talks in the Spring etc. - all the way to the next GE].. and the consolidation of existing legislation".
" Small businesses complain that the most burdensome regulations they face from EUrope include data protection laws, working time rules...." Forget all of the above which are fundamental to the EU's patriarchal rule for its citizens but perhaps the shapes of cucumber and bananas and the like will be repealed. Still, they can call it A Pyrrhic victory.

Talk should be cheap but anything that includes the EU is ultra expensive.

They, 27 ministers talk and they are all put up in 5 Star luxurious Hotels along with the entourage who also have to be fed on gourmet dinning and watered on £50+ per bottle fine wine. And at the end of that junket we hear that they are going to repeat the farce later in the year.

The biggest tip in good business practice for me, was a small sign that said, simply, - "DO IT NOW!"

The Public Sector are all self-inflicted paraplegics when it comes to this simple but effective dictate. And that is why the Public Sector, in its present form, is a heavy ball and chain around the necks of the Private Sector workers. They dither and procrastinate beyond the comprehension of real professionals.

As long as it remains so, we shall never ever see any real growth in this country.
As Sir Cliff said, many years ago, "Move it" and Do It Now!!
